This is the Mazda Luce Rotary Coupe R 130. A quite obscure Wankel car, shown as the RX 87 prototype at the 1967 Tokyo Motorshow.

It shared little in common with the Luce saloon, and was in fact the very first FWD Wankel-powered car ! The Luce Rotary Coupe was produced between october 1969 and 1971.
Like the 4-door Mazda Luce, it was designed by Bertone. The strangest thing is its engine : the type 13A was only built for the Luce R130 ! And only 976 were produced...

I'd really like to know why !!

Nice front view as well.  Should "Luce" be in the title as well?

No; this was the concept built by Bertone and shown at the Tokyo show in 1967. The production Luce 180 came on the market in 1969
