As you might guess, this cars aero cockpit was designed to help the top speed of this car. While it's a one-off, it was the predecessor to a run of race cars that competed at Le Mans. Le Mans is known, for its   l  o  n  g   Mulsanne straight, where top speed was everything.

It has a Mercedes look to me......

BTW, anyway to get those smaller  pics enlarged a bit for those of us with tired eyes?

Yes, I believe it's one of the very first 1952 300SLs, before the Gullwing doors were developed to ease entry and exit. Not to say that the Gullwings really make it easy, but compared to this one's very small conventionally-opening doors, they do.

Yes, and any of those that aren't solved.......

Do you make them smaller after they're solved then?

Otto Puzzell

I'm not sure why that's happening, though I admit I'm new to web design. The pics (pre-solution) are of reasoable size on my monitor, and I try to check everything in IE and Firefox before posting. The picture above, for instance, is 450 pixels wide. How big is it on your screen?

Hmmm. I live at Le Mans and I reckon, looking at it and knowing the history of Le Mans that is one of the cars built for the Index of Coefficiency trophy like the Panhard or Citroen. Most of those sported 750 or 850cc motors and this is a small and lightweight car but I don't think they are gullwing. It could be a Peugeot too since I am not sure if it is sporting a Cotal electric gearchange. Whatever, I am scratching my head!

Welcome, lynxd67!

You are are the right track - literally, and figuratively.  ;D

When you've narrowed it down, give us your best guess.

Panhard had a great history at Le Mans and my friend owns the 1957 car, again an alloy monocoque. I'll go for Panhard DB since Peugeot has much Le Mans history of that time. I'll further guess at around 1954. My doubts are that all panhards were painted blue being the national colour. Only a shot in the dark though - it is a real teaser!

Then in the history of French Le Mans cars I can only think of Peugeot at the moment. I was convinced it was a Panhard DB to start with but apparently not.
