What's this, based on what, by whom and from when - for 1 point?:

Is it based on a 1949 Chrysler (or Chrysler product)?

I remember seeing this car on a great site called "Bring A Trailer", which covers all types of really interesting odd vehicles - including this one. I remembered it specifically because it is SO not what you would think. Underneath it all, it's a heavily customized 1937 Ford: It was originally modified in the early 1950s by the Peretto brothers of Alameda, California. The car did quite well at the '51 and '52 Oakland Roadster Shows. It appears that the 1946 Chevy grille was added later, but it seems to blend in pretty well. In any case, I would have NEVER guessed that this car was a 1937 Ford!  Would you?

Sorry Richard, your guess has been superseded!
Indeed I would never have associated this car with a '37 Ford; I was looking forward to all the wrong guesses!
But that's not to be as fyreline has solved it and earned his point.
