Renault makes sense, given the car lurking just over the shoulder of this one, but I've never heard of that model before.........

Well that's because I can't spell worth beans, I was drunk and I like to make stuff up.

Here's a Primaquatre, which the mystery car ain't.

I am so weak at the pre-war cars, I'm not sure why I even try. I simply can't discern between a Jowett, DKW, Hansa, Praga, Hanomag, Wolesely, Gaz or any of the hundreds of other minor manufacturers of the era. They all look like the same damn car to me, with only minor detail changes.

Unless it stands out like a Rosengart Supertraction, I am lost. ???

Nope, none of those...  :)

Cool avatar, by the way. I notice it has no valves or spark - is it a two-stroke diesel?

It'a radial aircraft engine. Obviously some design details were left out in the interest of simplification. The original is hypnotic and, some might say, somewhat erotic.

Here's another shot of the same engine type.

And an actual engine

And none of this brings me any closer to what that car is. I feel like I'm trapped in the Monty Python Cheese Skit. Is it a Wensleydale?

I'm pretty sure I've seen that eight-section grill guard thingy before.

Like all my other vague recollections, though, it does me no good.

Umm... my bad. Wensleydale is a cheese favored by Wallace and Gromit. As far as I know, there is no such car. But as far as I know doesn't go very far at all, so there very well may have been Wensleydale automobiles. I am fairly certain there was no Danish bimbo or Dorset Bluveny.

Next time, I'll include the  ;D

While this brand has expired, it's hardly unique.

Hmmm - the marque has expired? The grill looks remarkably like a Lancia, and they still make cars.

There's no prize for identifying the Renault in the background, but I am convinced the car in question is a Delahaye. The trouble is they made so many types of car (the Figoni and Falaschi ones being pre-eminent) and a friend here owns the only known example of a certain model. But I am sure it is a Delahaye. The RHD fooled me at first but most Delahaye's were like that as were most high class cars at the time, the reason being so that the chauffeur could alight on the pavement and open the door for his lordship without having to go round the car.

As I wrote in another place, I (still) think it's a Salmson and probably a 1938-9 S4E.
It certainly looks just like one, but it could be a bit of French badge-engineering to confuse us 68 years later, although most had distinctive radiator grilles different from this.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here. Based solely upon the badge, with no knowledge of any cars produced by this marque that look even vaguely like this...

Borgward?

Well, I found out what it is. I had to cheat though. I admit it. I asked the only person that I thought would know and sure enough, he did. Immediately.

I've been trying to get him to join autopuzzles but so far he hasn't. If he did, I fear there wouldn't be much left unsolved. I'll keep working at him.

Anywho, it's a Unic U6 3-liter.

I've never heard of Unic, but it is a rather unfortunate name when spoken aloud. I don't think they'd sell very well in the US.

It is! I though the clue in Reply #21 was a giveaway, but I was wrong.  ;)

We'd love to have your friend join us. We could always set up a super-elite level for you, him, Sea Lion and a few other über AutoPuzzlers. I used to think I was good at these, until I saw what some of you folks are capable of.

:hail: I'm often in awe.

I'm not even close to his league. Compared to him, I'm a hack.

For instance: look at this picture. The car in front is obvious. But what about the car in back of it? He got it. Now, take a look at the car where you can see the grille and headlights. Yeah, he knew what that is too.

I'm a hack. A pretty good hack, but a hack nonetheless.
