1905 Spyker?
No, I can see why it might be, but I'm afraid it's a bit earlier and a bit more obscure than that
well?
1904 15hp Delaunay Belleville?
No, I can see why it might be, but I'm afraid it's a bit more obscure than that
If it's something more obscure, could it be a 1904 25hp Speedwell?
Trouble is that with so many cars of this era, a lot of them look the same...

Not a Speedwell.
You're right about looking the same - if you are told what one might be, it is quite easy to confirm (or disprove) but picking a make out of thin air is quite hard.

Huum...this is harder...is that Fial Legnano?
No

1904 8hp Bentall?
No, I can see why it might be, but I'm afraid it's not that
Time for a clue: do you think this car would cut the mustard?
Found it!
It's a 1903 Cottereau Populaire, 8 hp.
Never would have got it without the mustard, though. It tends to spice things up a little ;)

Sorry, but I'm still clueless here. What was the hint? ???
I'm not always smart enough to read between the lines...
The clue (as I took it, anyway) was that the most famous types of mustard (like the Dijon) are French...
Ah I see, after that it must have been very easy. (http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g106/pan1968/Gifs/faint.gif)
:yeah:

I think you've picked up all that the clue was intended to tell you there!
I'm afraid that we native english-speakers can be a bit obscure for those working in a second language - but with some of them, you'd never know it was the case. ;D
So, is it solved then?

So, this is wrong, then?
No of course it's right - I'd just got latched on to the discussion about cutting the mustard and didn't look above it where you'd already posted the right answer.
Apologies all round and a well-deserved point.
I was surprised that this lasted as long, since I got this and the two others I posted at the same time from the same museum website!
The problem with that website is that if you're going to look through it all, you'll be spending a month... so narrowing it down to only French manufacturers from between 1900 and 1915 was quite helpful ;)
Is this the missing photograph?
No it isn't but I've now reinstated the missing photograph
