Based on the unusual wheel on the front (back?), I guess industrial prime mover for a belt power system, circa....1915 or so.
In this instance, this engine was used to power an automobile.
The thing at the front would have been a crankshaft vibration damper, essential for a straight six and probably the invention of Fred Lanchester in 1905/6.
It's not a Lanchester engine. but with its separate dome-topped cylinders it looks about 1906 or so.
Quite big, so is it from the USofA?
It is.
Time to get this one back in gear... (http://www.autopuzzles.com/teamwork.gif)
:bump:
This six-cylinder motor is from 1909.
Looks a lot like a Cadillac 30 engine but with two extra cylinders.
This maker was a bit down-market from Cadillac.
Downmarket might mean Ford, but he'd given the K up by 1909.
Perhaps it's a Continental engine
Not a Ford, nor a Continental.
:bump:
I would like to move this in the solved section...I've got a list of six-cylinder american cars from 1909...should I post them one by one or I should try to narrow down this list? For example is it a (relatively) well-known builder?

Reply #9, above, would suggest the answer is "no".
Willys-Overland Model 34 or a 45HP?
Indeed - it is a six-cylinder, 45 horsepower Overland engine, from 1909.
Thanks for putting this oldie but goody to rest!
My pleasure! ;)
