Title: SOLVED - Geo Quiz: A Variation - by Paul Jaray, Allemano, Quiller and DHoffmann
Post by: @re on August 13, 2008, 01:49:38 PM
Alrighty then!

Here's another puzzle where the cars are linked to geographic locations. I hope this one will be difficult, I tried my best to achieve that... :)

In this one, the geographic locations are not the places where the cars are built. Instead, the names of the cars are linked to the names of the places.

So please, have a go: Geographic locations #1 to #12, cars A to L - link away!

And the cars (none of which date further back than the Eighties):

Right off the top of my head: Car D (I guess a Colani creation) and location 3 (Stelvio Pass in Switzerland) seem to go together.

If I may, Location 4 and car D.

Colani Utah 6 - Utah from space.

And I'm gonna have a stab in the dark at the location, I can't find anything from those pics you put up.

Car G - Location 10
Lamborghini Sogna - Sogna Resort of something?

Pity - not a gazebo in sight ;)
Title: Re: Geo Quiz: A Variation
Post by: @re on August 14, 2008, 06:17:22 AM
No gazebos, I'm afraid... but there's always picture #2, which is just about as easy to identify as the good ol' gazebo :)

Location #4 does indeed go with car D, it's the 1989 Colani Utah 6, and a satellite image of Utah.

This means that pieter's guess was a good one, but not quite right. And DHoffmann's other guess is not quite right, either, I won't give away details about what's wrong.

Points are awarded like this: Two points for each correctly identified pairing, that means no points for identifying only one half. So, DHoffmann has earned two points so far, and there are 22 points still up for grabs.

I did not read the question properly - it's not a link between the car and the place as I thought, but between the name of the car and the place. Apologies

No worries! Besides, it's not the Stelvio pass... ;)

See what I mean? One musn't limit his interests to cars only, and Paul Jaray, an example to us all, sure knows his geography!

I know what location #1 is, but I can't find a car that shares the name with the city, or the specific location.

Location #3 reminds me of the Col du Turini, Southern France. But I can't find any Turini-car...

And location 5 is obviously Scotland but I'm unable to recognize ANY of those cars.

Otto: If you do know what location #1 is, you will agree that I could very easily have picked a much more mainstream car to go with that picture. But this was meant to be difficult, so I didn't ;D

DynaMike: You're quite unbelievably close, in many ways! But it's not the Col du Turini.

And Ray B: I'll give a clue here. You, of all people, should be able to solve that one... even if you don't recognise the cars! ;) Now that'll keep you thinking...

Location 5 (Scotland) matches Car#5 (Ecosse Signature)

I recognise car F but can't match any of the locations to it. Is maybe location 2 the one?
Title: Re: Geo Quiz: A Variation

Location 5 and Car E is quite correct! Ray B could maybe have worked out that one, being French and all ;)

Regarding car F: You're on the right track. If you just do a little more digging I'm convinced that you'll be certain!

So, am I working with the name of the city, or the specific site memorialized with the marker?

"On the right track" you say. OK, I'm going to go with Corry (terminus of the Pennsylvania railroad) as location 2 and car F being the Corry Cultra

Sometimes (not very often, fortunately) being French is not enough. Don't you believe that I didn't try. But I didn't get further than Ecurie Ecosse...

Some answers are in order!

Otto: You are working with the name of the specific site.

Quiller: Correct! Try a quick Google picture search for "corry pennsylvania" and see what you find ;)

Ray B: Good thinking... I could also have picked the Ascari Ecosse, which is what this thing was initially called:

I did find that one, but it didn't look at all like car E.

Well known from the Tour de France: Location #3 is Alpe D'Huez. It matches with car B the 1996 Ghia Alpe.

I haven't noticed them yet!
Was still busy in the Rookie and Expert section.

Have to admit that I was lucky with the leftover cars and locations.
Most of the already solved puzzles were a complete mystery to me!

My compliments to @re for a great puzzle!

Very well done!

I mentioned earlier that Col de Turini was very close to the correct answer on location #3 - well, Col de Turini is a famous Tour de France landmark, as is the correct answer, Alpe d'Huez. The picture is actually from the Tour itself - you can see the road is packed with bikes, cars and people. As for the Sognefjord - I'm Norwegian, and had to try to squeeze a local one in here, even though it didn't fit completely... in my defence, the locals do call it 'Sognafjorden'.

Which means that this is the final score - and the puzzle now goes into the Solved section!

Location 1: Avalon Cemetery, Soweto - goes with car L, 2005 SB Avalon - Paul Jaray
Location 2: Corry, Pennsylvania - goes with car F, 1983 Corry Cultra - Quiller
Location 3: Alpe d'Huez - goes with car B, 1998 Ghia Alpe - Allemano
Location 4: Utah - goes with car D, 1989 Colani Utah 6 - DHoffmann
Location 5: Scotland (French: Ecosse) - goes with car E, 1988 Ecosse Signature - Quiller
Location 6: Sognefjord - goes with car G, 1991 Art&Tech Lamborghini Sogna - Allemano
Location 7: Sachsenring - goes with car I, 1996 Sachsenring UNI 1 - Allemano
Location 8: L'Aquila - goes with car A, 2000s Aquila Sports Cars Mille Miglia - Paul Jaray
Location 9: Pisa - goes with car H, 1992 Pisa Scorpion - Paul Jaray
Location 10: Kamala Beach - goes with car K, 2001 DAX Kamala - Paul Jaray
Location 11: Sahel Desert - goes with car C, 2003 Iran Khodro Sahel - Paul Jaray
Location 12: Milano - goes with car J, 1990 Eagle Milan 2+ - Paul Jaray

Total tally: Paul Jaray 12 points, Quiller 4 points, Allemano 6 points, and DHoffmann 2 points.

By the way: Thanks, Allemano, for the compliments - but I really should redirect them to Otto Puzzell, who invented this kind of puzzle! All hail to the master... ;)
