ok, this is probably too easy, but here goes. You know what it is (duh!). But, why was it painted like this?
certainly is an interesting look...
:bump:
What's unusual about that - we often think US colour (sorry color) schemes are pretty strange ;D
But, it isn't an AMC...Otherwise it might have been a standard factory paint scheme!!!
It looks like Brooks Stevens got his hands on a 1965 Ford Mustang...

Dreaming of a Gaylord?

Well, the car is US obviously, but the paint scheme is not.
Bad taste.

Perhaps to confuse enemy submarines?
Was it related somehow to the black-and-white "bad behavior" flag used in racing?
Interesting guess, but no.
Painted for police use overseas?
Nope. Civilian use. Owners of these cars (there were a handful) would have taken delivery of the car this way, though its not a factory paint job.
Were they given to former WWII pilots as a commemoration of some sort?
no
Is it a corporate giveaway of some kind.
yes!
A puzzle in need of a fresh clue...

I spoke too soon!
Hello again.
I've heard of a Canadian special called Player Special from 1966...
there you go.
Rothmans cigarettes corporate colours.
I don't think this blue, especially as Paul Jaray's pic is monochromatic. It might also be black (see the first pic) and Black is the color of John Player Special. You'll tell me that there is no gold pinstripping. But the two-toning is also much more reminiscent of Marlboro than Rothman....
So I tend to agree more with Paul Jaray's Payer Special. He didn't invent it I suppose.
EDIT: I found a website showing packages of Player cigarettes sold in Canada. They more recent than 1965, but you can clearly see blue and white separated by an oblique line, same as on the Mustang.

Player's is correct....sorry I wasn't more clear.

So why not grant Paul Jaray his point and move that to the Solved Puzzles ?
Sorry, I don't remember how to do that. I dont' have time for this stuff at the moment, but wanted to wrap up the ones I started. Please remind me how to do it, or somebody else take care of it if you don't mind.
Use the "Move Topic" button on the bottom left of this page, then untick the box that says "Post a redirection topic", change the topic's subject to something with the solution in it (1966 Ford Mustang Player Special) or similar, and then: the "Move Topic" button again.
