Title: SOLVED - Whaddyacallit #19 - Walter C.Jerome's Sir Vival
Post by: Ray B. on January 15, 2008, 05:02:49 AM
This man is driving a car, not a Sherman tank. What is the name of that car, what is the name of the man who built that car (it may be this one, without certainty)?

The man behind it is Mr Walther C. Jerome, of worchester, Mass.
As its name implies, assuring the survival of its occupants in a crash situation was the primary purpose of its designer.
It was built in 1959, using a 1948 Hudson Sedan as the basis. Jerome hoped to convince the major car makers to purchase his automotive safety ideas and adapt them to their own products. among these ideas there was an articulated, two-section body with engine, drivetrain and steering up frontand control and passenger cabin in the rear. Also, both body sections were ringed by heavy-duty bumpers and the driver occupied an elevated, centally-located seat with a panoramic view of the road. No manufacturers lined up to buy his patents and Jerome also got no orders for complete cars. The lone example built ...survives...in the collection of Edward Moore in Bellingham, Mass.

Tuckeroo got the car, Paul Jaray got the man. Three more pics for Grob's collection.

Ok, to be honest, after Tuckeroo named the car, I knew it was in the Standard Catalog of american Cars and it wasn't hard to find out the details because I knew the car, and to be...honestier...the name of Grob's pic was half an answer....

I didn't know the car was in that book, which I don't have. I'd seen it long ago, in an old copy of Popular Mechanics I believe, before finding it again on the net.
As for the points, I'd say it's too bad that Grob didn't remember the signification of his file name. The rules are harsh. If five members at least request it, maybe he should get a bonus point.

No problem!

That´s why I love this site as some cars will be definitely identified here...

When I see oddities like that (a scan from an old 1950´s german  "Hobby" magazine) I file every fact I can get. In this case it was only Jerome, Worcester and USA and I wasn´t able to get any more infos via google, so this is prefect.

I quote from the sales brochure:

Safety, Beauty, Comfort, Originality.

Safety? If you say so. Comfort? Ok. Originality? Yeah, pretty much defines the word, if you ask me. But BEAUTY? This? You should be put to jail for such a statement.
