Appears to be a misalliance between a Jaguar Mark X and a Renault 12.
Please don't tell me it was in series production - it's bad enought that it had a name >:D

...the Ford Playback?

Or was it the Whiplash?

This is, thankfully, a one-off, and obviously some kind of misjudged Jaguar tribute. No Renault parts involved, though.

One of those countless Japanese retro conversions ala Mitsuoka? The mirrors also look Japanese.

Being a one-off, this one is very easy to count ;) but although I follow you on the mirror idea, it's not Japanese.

Looks to me that is originally was a Mercury Cougar, by the roof and the Mercury wheels.  There were several neo-classics based on the Cougar body, but this is a bit different, and better.  Still odd.

It was originally a Mercury Cougar. But who did this to it, and what was the creation called?

called by the creator or called by the general public?
I have a feeling i know the second one is probably negative ;)

This is a 1985 Mercury Cougar with the front and rear sections of a Jaguar 420 grafted on, it was built by Larry Sabo. I couldn't find a name for this creation.

My original source didn't mention Larry Sabo, but it's obviously the same car. The builder, according to my source, was Noah Yelley, but I can find no trace of that now, apart from a dead link. So I'll give you the point. The car's name is "Couguar" (fitting, eh?).

My original source also stated that this car was finished in 1996, and the other source, which was undoubtedly the one you found, says that it was 'a current project' in 2001. So I think it might be likely that Sabo wasn't the man with the original plan.
