Title: Solved (by João & others) - Name That Make #32: A Puzzle of... Something
Post by: ftg3plus4 on October 06, 2009, 07:58:56 PM
OK, folks, it's time for a themed puzzle. And the theme is... something you'll have to figure out. There is a definite pattern to the selection of these makes, and I have strictly held to this pattern (although there's one case where a minor variation was unavoidable). No points will be given for guessing the pattern, but once it's been revealed the make names should be considerably easier to find out. (And, yes, I know there's a repost or two.)

Lots of points up for grabs, some more easily than others. Good luck!

OK, no bites from Rookies (do we even have any of those right now?). Time to open up to Experts.

Correct on both! But we have a long way to go, folks...

20 - Dalat - guido66
24 - Autotrix - guido66

I don't suppose the pattern is obvious yet...

Theme: the cars are alphabetticaly ordered, by the last letter of the make
Title: Re: Name That Make #32: A Puzzle of... Something
Post by: ftg3plus4 on October 11, 2009, 09:37:33 AM
Hmmm... I guess it was obvious...

Notice the little clue in the title: a PuzzlE oF SomethinG. (I wanted to have a title where the words ended in a, b & c, but you try coming up with one that wouldn't be too obvious!)

Actually, the pattern is just a little more specific than that (with, as I said, one very minor exception), but I'll see if you all can figure that out as we go!

Wow... I'm surprised there's anything left! I knew some of these would be easy, but I have underestimated you guys once again! Some of the rest will be harder, though...

(BTW, the Derby I got to see "in the metal," and my teenage son took the pic.)

PS10 -  Brooks Stevens Excalibur.
I have a partially different name for this... one that fits the pattern (though not quite as nicely as the rest).

I'll keep looking, but this is what I've found sofar.

"The first Excaliburs were lightweight race-and-ride roadsters built in 1951 with "vintage-modern" bodywork on the Henry J chassis"

The Derby picture was difficult! I never saw a pic of it from the rear and I only recognized it because of the Tampa Bay Museum Citroens.. ;D

Metalshapes - The answer is closer than you think!

João (re: Derby) - Boy, I never know what's going to give the answer away!

João (re: #7) - Maytag is correct!

D-Type - Sorry, #4 is not Oakland. But, appropriately, I was just looking at a pic of one and wondering if someone would guess that!
Also, there is no Chiribiri here. #10 is neither the right era nor the right letter, and we already have "i" anyway!

Last 3 all correct!

Custoca, of course, is also known as "Custoka," but either would be OK.

It occurred to me last night what I probably should have used for #10: NJ. Oh, well, it would have had the same issues as the Excalibur J anyway. It would have been a repost, and it would have slightly violated a (heretofore unstated) part of my theme: one-word, non-acronym names.

Just four to go, including the two I've been expecting to be the hardest.

Number 4 is a 1906 Compound Model 7.5

You naughty, naughty boy - you changed the color pic to b&w ;)
Title: Re: Name That Make #32: A Puzzle of... Something
Post by: ftg3plus4 on October 13, 2009, 01:06:05 PM
Compound it is! But why is changing the color pic to b&w a problem? I did that a bunch of times here!

But #18 is neither Gardner nor Rickenbacker. It's a shorter-lived make than those. (American, as has now been established.) Sorry for such a generic-looking pic, but it was all I could find.

Title: Re: Name That Make #32: A Puzzle of... Something
Post by: ftg3plus4 on October 13, 2009, 01:46:14 PM
Nope, not Dagmar either.

My sincere apologies, guys, but I just looked again at the page where I found the original #18 pic and realized that it was not of the actual car in question, but of a common car that the car in question somewhat looked like. I have, on short notice, managed to find an actual (though admittedly lousy) pic of the real car. Please take a look before continuing with guesses. I'll post a better pic later if I can find one (though this one was hard enough to find).

That's it! Apologies again for the mistake.

For some reason I decided to see if I could find another pic, and in the process happened to notice, belatedly, that the caption to the one I had said the Jaeger somewhat resembled this Chevy except it didn't have a rumble seat! AAAAAAAA!  :o Fortunately I found the real pic at the same time (although a better one would be welcome if someone has one... hint hint). Sigh. For this mistake, I hang my head in shame (and refrain from posting another puzzle until who knows when)! At least I caught it before someone else busted me.

Final results:

Ftg3plu4, this puzzle was awesome. I don't think it was such a terrible mistake, and if you have more of these, please post them!
Only a little complain...befor giving to many hints, why don't you move it to the lonely pros?  ;)

OK, what could I do next? Maybe one with Babcock, Abadal, Scootmobile... nah!

"The Jaeger was an automobile built in Belleville, Michigan by the Jaeger Motor Car Company from 1932-33. The Jaeger was powered by a six-cylinder Continental engine, rated at 70 bhp. Wire wheels were standard on the vehicle, with a V-radiator grille and three diagonal groups of four louvers on each side of the bonnet. Only a few coupes and convertible coupes were actually produced. The vehicle sold for $700."

Would be a great idea!

I'll shut up after this, but... I blame my mistake mostly on the article where I got the first "Jaeger" pic. Who writes a whole article about a car, then doesn't provide a picture of that car, but of some other car that it looks kind of like? Especially when most cars from that era look kind of like each other to begin with? Lame, lame, LAME!
