Metalshapes was first. It's "Edsel development model", which makes more sense, and I don't have anymore details.
But he was first.

That will explain these lines...but my source, a magazine from the 50s, reports that this 'car' was shown in a Salon with a name...

metalshapes

E-car.

For experimental car.

Paul Jaray

You are very close, but that's not the name I have and that I found now googling in another place.

metalshapes

#29
They were even confusing in naming the thing.

Its a miracle they sold any at all...  ;D

Edit.

I haven found the name yet, but I did find some proposed names.

I felt I had to share those with you...  :D  :D  :D

"Resilient Bullet"
"Ford Silver Sword"
"Mongoose Civique"
"Varsity Stroke"
"Pastelogram"
"Andante con Moto".
"Utopian Turtletop".

Dont you just get the feeling these people were trying to play a cruel joke on the company?

Paul Jaray

Another hint..Ford presented other 2 (relatively) more known concepts with this one, 1 of them was a former puzzle, the other was a very futuristic one.

metalshapes

That probably means it was at the '55 Chicago Auto Show with the Lincoln Futura.

Thats all I got...

Paul Jaray

You deserve a point for your research...
another one is available for the name...
this car is not from 1955...

You wanna be the man, you gotta Name That Car!

Paul Jaray

It was a quite well known event, and there were also 2 other prototypes with this one, one of this was supposed to be a sort of flying car.

Carnut

It was indeed from 1958 (being the only year between 1957 and 1959...) but it did have a name.
It was called the E-196X.
It was never other than a scale-model and it was intended to explore a possible development of the 1958 Edsel's front-end theme.

Yes!
Y E S !

Well done!  :applause: :applause:

Thanks!

Incidentally the guy on the left of the picture posted by metalshapes is Edsel executive stylist I.B. Kaufman, whilst the guy leaning on the roof of the model is styling director George Walker.  I wonder if they paid the ultimate price for that grille, of which they were so proud?!
