Youre right on.

A Dutch Renault based built racecar started by Hans Kreisel but handed over to
P. Bos Eyssen who finished it and raced it in 1953 and 1954.

First I tried with an OCR program, extracting the text from a scanned page in pdf format, then using a translator (like babelfish or google)...but I'm not satisfied with the result, so I'm doing it manually from time to time...

I find translating a complete text through any automatic translator always terrible. I almost understand the original text in a strange language better then when goole or something else turned it in to Dutch. When I see the result I always ask myself '' why do I even try??''

You can let me know if you get stuck on some nice Dutch words

Ahah..I also type the text manually and then translate it with Google translator

I'm afraid to take this book in a scanner, as it doesn't look too sound.

Those Google translations are never accurate, but in most cases you get at least a feel what's the text about.
And it also works fine with Cyrillic and even Asian characters.

...especially with Asian like Chinese or Japanese, because I know no OCR program that can extract such characters from paper...

Oh but I am not saying it is totally useless, on the contrary. Only with large amouts of technical data and in cases you need to save the translation for later use I find it not to helpfull.
Than I have to change to many words that are translated to literal, and refrase to much

Just to check the content rough,of a text in a language you do not speak, it is more than OK

Thats gives me an idea...
We have people from all over the world and in many cases sharing the same books...
I can't ask a Dutch friend to translate a book for me (not for free at least) but I will be happy to translate a book for him from Italian...and the same goes with some German books and with AN Hungarian book!
Not complete books, but let's say a page for a page.
Not professional translations, but a quick 'you know what I mean' translation...
Just thinking...

translations in extracts are OK; more than this is beyond my capabilities.

I'm lucky to understand most of the Lammerse book as Dutch is somehow similar to German

To me Dutch sounds like some sort of a mix of German and English, so that English part is quite easy to understand, but since I don't know German....

......and there is Dutch and Dutch. I am from Amsterdam The Netherlands,but dont ask me to communicate with someone from a Dutch part like Twente or Friesland, that also suposed to be Dutch speaking. No way I can understand what the are saying, and they for sure do not understand me either.
Only if we both do are very best to speak Dutch as common possible there can be communication
