The wheels on car A look to be from a 1980s Fiat Panda. Is that what it's based on?

Not 100% sure, but I believe it is not.

I'd say Fiat 127 as the base of the first one.

This car is not equipped with a Fiat engine, so I doubt it is Fiat based.

The first car I say from memory was Britsh build and was "unusual" in that you could see the structure through the bodywork. I believe the car was made in the early nineties.

Indeed British.  Also the period is about right.

The first car is the Ringspeed Eco 2. Is the second anything to do with Rinspeed?

A Rinspeed Aliporta, perhaps (VW Golf with gullwing doors)?

Not Aliporta.

I lock this one for studhamsmudger, because with the info he provided, he can solve the puzzle and earn the point.

After his reply, the puzzle is open again for all experts to properly identify the VW (if studhamsmudger is not first).  An additional point will be awarded for the correct identification.

Rinspeed Golf Turbo?

Rinspeed Golf Turbo?

Indeed Rinspeed but the car has a specific name which is not 'Golf Turbo'.

But as I mentioned before, you can already identify what is present in A, B and A&B

As one is a Rinspeed and the other a Ringspeed I guess the difference would be the letter ' G '. Is the answer that simple?

That's it, but for this answer you had to identify both brands.  Point awarded.

This puzzle is open again for all experts for the correct name of the VW.

I expect I'm being a bit thick here, but I'm struggling to see how the Venn diagram applies. The names of both A and B have the letters of "Rinspeed" in them. A has a letter "G" which is not in B. What does B have that's not in A? Or am I missing something?

(Probably)  ::)

Simple math:

A has G
B is empty
A&B has Rinspeed

But that doesn't make sense.

In a simple Venn diagram like the one in the preamble, circle A contains items with one characteristic, circle B contains items with a different one, and the overlapping part contains items with both characteristics.

So B can't be empty. You're saying that the overlapping part contains elements which are not present in A, and also not present in B. Anything in the overlapping part has to contain elements which are present in both A and B. Doesn't it?  ???

It does.

It is already a long time that I left school, and this forum is about cars, not math.

But as far as I know you can't have something identical that is present in both B and A&B

I think that A&B share 'R'-'I'-'N'-'S'-'P'-'E'-'E'-'D'
While 'G' is unique for A
B has nothing that is not common with A, so it's empty

But I might be completely wrong on this.

Rinspeed is in both A and B, therefore in A&B. G is only in A.

Well, sorry for that little digression. Back to the puzzle - there's still the Golf to identify.

I haven't got a picture to help with it, but I found mention of a model called the Rinspeed Topaz. I don't know if it was ever a production model, but there was a prototype shown at Geneva in 1982, with a diesel engine fitted with a Brown Boveri Comprex forced-induction system. It's described as having a special body built by Rinspeed, with a hatchback opening down to the level of the back bumper, a fixed roof over the rear seats, with fixed rear windows, and a removable Targa roof over the front seats. Could that be car B?

(As far as I understand, DeAutogids.nl confirms my explanation, not yours... )

And back on topic:
It's indeed  the Rinspeed Golf Topaz Comprex
