Genuine classic car or modern recreation ?

It is an old self-built one-off in contemporary design style - so I would say it is a genuine car.

It was built after 1951.
Maybe some technical components were pre 1946, but I do not know.

The engine came from a company that is still active.

EDIT:

The chassis came from a company that is still active.

The engine make is not existant any more.

Sorry, I have mixed that one up...  :bag:

To help: there is a direct connection between chassis and engine.

I did not deny Ford group completely guys ;)

Well- I guess I will help a bit:

The chassis is Ford

The engine is a product of the Ford group...

QuoteAmerican chassis and engine ?

This seems to be a true US-American special.

QuoteSix cylinder engine?

I think it must have been equipped with an eight cylinder engine when I see in which road races it did compete back then...

I'm not confused anymore, thanks.

Edsel engine ? Mercury and Lincoln still exist, and I can't think of another US Ford group defunct brand.

The Mercury brand was dropped in 2011.

Don't feel embarrassed - I had to look it up! I hadn't realised either.

Is this the car of Howard Raftery ?

It's Dick Seifried's Mercury Special - here's a photo of the car at Torrey Pines in 1952.

(This too me a long time, because I was convinced it had raced at Watkins Glen that year, and I wasted a lot of time trying to identify a car at the Glen carrying #46, when there was no car with that number entered in the race!)

The older puzzle has a less than helpful title - in the UK "Merc" can only mean one thing, and it has a three-pointed star.
