Genuine classic car or modern recreation ?
It is an old self-built one-off in contemporary design style - so I would say it is a genuine car.

I have edited my earlier post.
I'm not confused anymore, thanks.
Edsel engine ? Mercury and Lincoln still exist, and I can't think of another US Ford group defunct brand.

The Mercury brand was dropped in 2011.
I probably spend too much time dealing with obscure cars and not enough with the mainstream ones :bag:
Don't feel embarrassed - I had to look it up! I hadn't realised either.
Is this the car of Howard Raftery ?
Kenneth Hill
Howard Raftery
It's Dick Seifried's Mercury Special - here's a photo of the car at Torrey Pines in 1952.
(This too me a long time, because I was convinced it had raced at Watkins Glen that year, and I wasted a lot of time trying to identify a car at the Glen carrying #46, when there was no car with that number entered in the race!)
Very good!
Aaargh....I know I saw it before!
