I think you've got it. The builder is Cannon but the actual name of the car is...? Your puzzle till your next reply...

I found this ..." the "Cannonball," as some called it, was finished bearly two weeks before the Pebble Beach race, on november 5 1950"...

In the text, but not in the Index or the Header.

Was that an unofficial nickname, maybe?

From another book...

..."Cannon built the Mk1, sometimes referred to as the Cannonball or the Vacuum Sweeper, in 1950." ...

Index and Header both call it the Cannon Mk1 in that book as well.
