Are you absolutely sure about #13? :P
Thereby hangs a tale ;D
Absolutely, and Allan seems to know the story.
Oh, good grief. ;D
You don't say. Wait til you hear the story (or find it yourself and you'll say :bag:
A little detour by the Experts' village, before it goes to the Pros' place.
2 is Pat Moss (and the checked jacket is worn by her brother Stirling)
13, since we were on about her, is Violette Morris.
In another place, someone posted the following:
There yet exists a book (in French) on her, titled "Violette Morris la gestapiste", published some years ago by les éditions du Fleuve noir. I have it somewhere home and must look for it in order to inform the name of the author. But I'm afraid it's out of copy, now.
This lady, a niece of General Gouraud, was first a boxer (!), then a cycling champion before switching to racing cars : she only competed in the cyclecar category, very popular in these years (the '1920s). She had a chirurgical ablation of her breasts, in order to be more comfortable when she wheeled in race !!!
This body-modification led to a ban of every kind of competition, cars or other, by the French Olympic Comitee.
When France was occupied in 1940 by the Nazis, she inserted into the Parisian Gestapo and worked in the awful "rue Lauriston" questioning house.
BTW, I never read or heard she had been involved by any manner in the arrest of "Williams" or Robert Benoist, so this can only be a theoretical wondering if.
In 1944 (circa April ? the date is in the quoted book), when she was travelling by car from Normandy back to Paris, the French Resistance attacked her car on the road and bombed it, killing all her passengers (a couple of "collaborateurs") along with her.
5 may be Hellé Nice (Mariette Hélène Delangle)
You're right about Pat Moss. I didn't expect less from you. Right too about Violette Morris. Thanks for the fascinating story, which I had just found too.
You're wrong about N° 5, but Mariette Hélène Delangle is somewhere around, just not here. Find where in the next 24 hours.
12 is Kay Petre I think
Right again.

17???
17 is correct (google her name and it's the first picture you get).
I'm guessing one of these might be Elisabeth Junek, but only 14 looks to me like it might possibly be her. Is it?
No, sorry, this is a racing lady ho doesn't appear in this puzzle.
6 is Joan Richmond
18 is Greta Molander, I think
Right again, for both.
No. 11 is Janet Guthrie.

No, and no...
Quote from: faksta on June 15, 2009, 02:33:23 PM
#8 is maybe Desire WIlson?
But yes!
And please don't forget to check #9, I think you might have missed it :)

And please don't forget to check #9, I think you might have missed it :)
Sorry. And you're right again.
#16 is Gilberte Thirion of course :)
Of course.
Now let's move this puzzle to offer the pros some fun.
No. 3 is Kitty Brunell.
14 is Janine Jennky
You're both correct.
10 is Erin Crocker
Correct again.
#1 is Sara Christian, the first woman to drive in a NASCAR race, the first and only woman to record a top five finish in NASCAR with 5th at the Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Aaaah, there's a NASCAR connoisseur!
Yes.
#5 Louise Smith
#7 Hellé Nice ?
#7 is Ethel Flock Mobley.
At the then-new New Atlanta Speedway just outside Jonesboro, GeorgiaDriving a '49 Cadillac owned by her husband, Ethel finished eleventh. She not only beat Bob and Fonty, but also racing legends Curtis Turner, Buck Baker and Herb Thomas.
#5 is Louise Smith, and #7 Ethel Flock (and not Hellé Nice, Paul, who had already been Identified as #17)
I love those little facts and stories about the racing ladies. Thanks. Keep them coming.
Still to ladies eager to be identified. Come on, gentlemen!
N° 4 is not that famous, I agree, but she may be found among her peers rather easily.
N° 15 is very famous, but I admit that this picture of her was taken at a very tender age...
Lady #15 should be Lilian Bryner then.
Sorry but no.
Although famous and a champion, she competes in a peculiar category.
Louise Aitken-Walker?
Also can lady 4 be Fay Taylour maybe?
#4 and #15 are none of those.
Number 4 can be Rita Rampinelli ???
Not any Rita.
#4 Christabel Carlisle
Nor a Christabel.
Could be lady 4 Amy Johnson?
Not an Amy
:)
I'll re-read the guesses, answers and clues, and take another whack at this one.
You might be rewarded. It's not too difficult.
Only 2 ladies to find, and some are going to be rewarded by a passel of points. You put me to shame.
Worthy of pros only
I've searched and searched. I'd really like to put this one to rest, but have come up short.
Could No4 be Denise McCluggage?
No.
Time for some other clues?
Lady 4 went round and round, Lady 15 ran straight away.
I suppose 15 could be Shirley Muldowney
And you suppose right!
So who can be the last one, Lady #4?
This one:
She is from NASCAR, I believe?
She is connected with NASCAR indeed, but never drove in a true NASCAR race, as I understand.
But you'll find her if you follow this trail.
So was she one of 13 women who drove in 1941 race, which, according to what I have, was considered an 'exhibition'?
Or is she Mildred Williams, Sara Christian's sister? I've read that she was invited to race in 1949. Pardon, in 1948. Having in mind that NASCAR has started in 1949 AFAIK, that is why she possibly didn't take part in any true NASCAR race?
No. She won a race (second picture), and not a NASCAR race, on what she says was a NASCAR race track.
But she has another connection with historic NASCAR.
Googling with the right words may lead you to the site where the answer lays for all to see.
Is she related to Mr France, senior?
No. She only met the legendary Bill France once.
Quote from: Ray B. on March 02, 2010, 12:18:02 PM
No. She only met the legendary Bill France once.
Did she have his baby?
:lmao:
No. She was happily married.
Was she married to a driver?
Yes. But not a famous one by very very very far.
If I were to tally the points now, we'd have:
Allan L: 6 pts
faksta: 3 pts
Allemano, neilshouse, Otto Puzzell: 2 pts
Paul Jaray: 1 pt
Unfortunately there's still a racing lady missing, despite the clues given, and they'll all have to wait.
;D
Look, what I just found:
"I, too, was a race car driver (when gals were called Powder Puff's) of this Stock Car # 92 (a '42 Ford) and won at the NASCAR Ruppert Stadium, the Woman's State Championship of NJ in the year 1950. Here's a pic of me then with the Checkered Flag in my really beat up car." by : VIVIAN A. "LUCKY" (HARVEY) McGRAW
You're on a roll Pal! :applause:

... and that will lead him quickly to another hit I guess.
He already did!
Well done gents! The points:
Allan L 6 points
faksta, Otto Puzzell 3 points
Allemano, neilshouse 2 points
Paul Jaray, pnegyesi 1 point
Well, I just added a tiny little bit, so it is very nice to put me in the subject line, but Allan L also deserves it!
Right! Changed, but I wasn't allowed to cite everyone as it made too long a line. Sorry folks!
I'm not Hungarian.
I know, but as I said I wasn't allowed to cite everyone as it made too long a line. I hoped that old timers like you wouldn't mind.
I'm just funnin' you.
As a Hungarian comedian once said: Everybody is Hungarian - but some of them don't know yet :)
In that case, I'm proud to be an honorary Hungarian.
