Title: Solved by many: Near Mint, 2nd Edition
Post by: Allemano on August 03, 2010, 04:38:43 AM
A bunch of twenty cars in near mint condition (only with a few chips!)

Some of them are reposts while some hadn't appeared here before.
As usual one point for each correct guess. (make, model designation & builder if necessary )
Good luck!

Points will be awarded afterwards!

#4 is what I believe was called the Brauks 8, which was a mish mash of parts from a Hudson Terraplane, a Desoto and some home crafted stuff.

#12 is the TVR Zante (also known as the SM)
#17 is the the TVR 'White Elephant' Holden V8-engined test-bed car
#19 I think is a Daimler One-0-Four which has been turned into an Estate Car, probably by Hooper
#16 is the first Apollo Convertible under construction in Italy
#15 I think is a Zelensis?
#9 might be a Warrior?

#5 is, as Autogids says, a Carlux Auwarter, but it dates from 1960 and is based on a T1 rather than the Transporter, which came rather later.

#12, the TVR Zante, was also known as the SM after Specialised Mouldings, who made the body.  It was shown in 1971 reputedly with a Ford V6 engine but was never in fact a runner.
It was purchased some years ago from the factory by a TVR Car Club member who intended to restore it and make a runner, and in fact it was shown on the TVR Car Club stand at the Classic Car Show in Birmingham quite a few years ago, alongside my TVR Trident and a couple of other TVR prototypes!  Unfortunately the member made no progress due to illness and this car was sold to, I believe, someone in Germany last year, who hopefully will make it into a runner.

#17 was known as 'The White Elephant' but was only ever a test-bed for a replacement V8 to take over from the venerable Rover engine, but no progress was made as I believe the Holden engine ceased production before the Rover engine!
It was run as a daily car by Peter Wheeler, owner of TVR, for a number of years.
It too has recently been bought by a TVR Car Club member who intends to restore it.

#5 is, as Autogids says, a Corlux Auwarter, but it dates from 1960 and is based on a T1 rather than the Transporter, which came rather later.
"T1" means nothing else than Transporter 1, so he was correct.
For obvious reasons it wasn't necessary to ask him which series the Auwärter was based on.

BTW: Keyboard shortcut ä = alt + 0228

OK; I always think of the Transporter as being the front-engined much later LT1, but I stand corrected.
Sorry about the umlauts; I must stick a reminder on my keyboard...
We just can't cope with these things in UK..

I am sure that it is correct... Common mistake is to call this car NAMI Spuitnik, but that's another one. The answer you need is KD or KD Sport 900. My mistake is name of the car which is basis for KD and that's ZAZ 965 ( not 963 )

There's indeed the little mistake that you're describing, but it's still not the number I have, try again!
(With hope that my source is more reliable than yours)

BTW it's #9 not #8. I've written the numbers under the pics.

The German text says:

Reader's letter:  "[...] Actually it's generally said that this car was bodied by Swiss coachbuilder Beutler."

Reply from Oldtimer Markt:  "Indeed this Bulli* was even mentioned in the auction catalogue as "Beutler Bus" most likely as its whereabouts is Switzerland. But after all it's the "Auwärter Carlux" built in a small series in 1962. Only three other cars are still known today"

*nickname for all VW transporters in Germany

Yes, I see what you mean.
Most of them say the same year (1963) and quite a few of the sites also say: "Beutler?"
Maybe Beutler designed it?

Right, yes.. For some reason I hadn't seen your reply.
Actually my first thought was also that it was an E-Type, as the 'screen and sills look E-Type, but I was beaten  to asking the question and since it's not solved I thought you'd discounted it as a Jag.

Back to the drawing board then...

I've to disappoint both of you since it's none of the above.
And it's not British either.

I'm not at all surprised; if it was British think we would have found the answer by now.
Have thought variously that it's German, French and Australian but have still drawn a blank!

So it's not an Alfa, Maserati, Lambo, Bizzarini or Abarth.
Not so many names left!  I didn't mention Ferrari because they were made by Scaglietti and you've discounted that, but maybe it's a Ferrari made by someone else?  Could it be one of the lovely Drogo-bodied 250 GT's?

Title: Re: Near Mint, 2nd Edition
Post by: Allemano on September 02, 2010, 11:25:20 AM
Neither an Etceterini nor an OSCA and not from the fifties..
You're still on the wrong track. Again, take a close look to the rear end, Isn't there a strange shape formed by the wire?
Further the entire appearance of that model should make you at least wonder considering the previous guesses...
Title: Re: Near Mint, 2nd Edition
Post by: Carnut on September 02, 2010, 11:55:54 AM
I've stared and stared at that rear end but can't quite work out what shape it is..  A roll-bar?    I have been concentrating on the 1960's but just thought that Osca-Fiat seemed to fit the shape well..

I'll have one last go for the moment - could it be an ASA?

Yes you're getting somewhere! :) Keep on digging! It is not exactly a Model A, but the year you've mentioned is correct. It was built for a special purpose which I'd liked to know. Where and when?

It's a 1931 Ford Model 68B Convertible built as a Montana mail carrier.
It is one of two custom-built in Glendive, Montana in 1941 in order to navigate through snow-drifts!
It has Goodyear diamond tread tractor tyres and a Model TT truck differential low-geared to allow for the over-sized tyres.
The US Mail took getting mail delivered in Montana very seriously!
