A turbine car? It sure is ugly.

Shaped like a muffler as an advertisement for a mufflershop.

I found pics of several of these, but not this particular one....

Yes, don't think it was designed to win any beauty contests...
Metalshapes is on the right track.

Just found it as the Mufflermobile

I too have quite a few variations on this theme. This one looks to be Chevette based.

You're right.  But I also need to know which company commissioned it for that point (in other words its full name)!
Should be easy now; locked for you for 24 hours to find.

found this:

The Mufflermobile was built by Joe, Scott and Steve Mingheneli who operate Meineke Muffler shops in Berlin and Marlton, New Jersey. The car is 16 feet long and weighs a ton. Based on a Mini pickup, The Mufflermobile project started with removal of all body panels, doors, fenders, and cargo bed. Then exhaust pipe was bent, cut and welded to the existing truck platform. This created a framework to hold 16 gauge steel panels, which were used to build the outer body.

You've got about as much info as is available there I think!
Actually the name I was looking for was Seeburg but I was mistaken, as that is the Seeburg Muffler Car, which looks broadly similar but without the huge exhaust pipe at the back, so that is a different car and my puzzle is not it!

Imagine now being hit from the side by a sleek sportscar. I could see that thing flip on it's side (or worse)

Why, do you think it would look worse upside down? :D

I was thinking more of the safety of the occupants, but I am pretty sure it would look better upside down.
