Title: Solved: SHW 4/20 Prototyp by Wunibald Kamm 1925 (Automotive Hall of Fame)
Post by: grobmotorix on June 20, 2010, 04:37:55 PM
Who can tell me anything about this one?

EDIT:

This is indeed one of three of the 1925 SHW 4/20 prototypes by Schwäbische Hüttenwerke GmbH  - in many ways a remarkable extreme lightweight construction.

The engineering was executed by the later aerodynamic pioneer Prof. Wunibald Kamm.
But the project failed like so many others, because BMW did not produce it, as it was planned in the first place...

QuoteThe SHW-Wagen pioneered many automobile characteristics which are commonplace today, such as a semi-monococque aluminum body, front-wheel drive, 4-wheel independent suspension, coil springs with hydraulic shocks, 4 wheels brakes and a horizontally opposed engine.

- it was years if not decades ahead of its time!

Thus Wunibald Kamm became a member in the "Automotive Hall of Fame" in 2009.

One of those has started at the 24h Taunus-race in 1925 and finished second in its class!

Front-wheel-drive and self-supporting light metal body — quite remarkable back then.

I´ve found an original essay on the SHW-Wagen in "Der Motorwagen".

The whole car weighed a mere 600 kg!!

Here are some Details:

Here's another picture.

On a point of interest, this might be the oldest company featured so far here on AP as SHW was founded in 1365 by Christian monks to produce raw iron!
