Title: A65 #32--Parts, man...SOLVED by neilshouse, Ray B., and Tom I
Post by: Aaron65 on May 14, 2011, 10:25:10 AM
I've noticed a lack of American car puzzles lately, and there's always a lack of mechanical puzzles.  I'm filling that void today.  1 point for each picture; all are welcome to give it a shot.  Tell me what is depicted, the model/sales name (if applicable), and a year, make, and model of a car the part was installed in.  Points tallied at the end...

#32d looks like the rear suspension from a Chevrolet Corvette. From 1963 maybe?

That's right!

Since I sold my (american) cars, I don't know where I hid my Chilton, which would have made this easier. So...
#b should be a bell housing and a torque converter on ... let's say a Fordomatic transmission?

And #32g, a differential from a Chevrolet Corvair? 1960?
Title: Re: A65 #32--Parts, man...
Post by: Ray B. on May 14, 2011, 11:09:21 AM
I was far from it: #b is a torque converter indeed, but for a 1953-57 Buick Dynaflow (I should have guessed)

Good!  I just rebuilt one of these!

Yep...these are leakers.  I replaced the seals and o-ring in the torque converter of mine when the engine was out, and wrote an article for the Buick Club's magazine about how to replace the torque ball at the back end of the transmission.

32c should be a Weber four barrel carburetor. But I have trouble finding what car he equipped. I only find marine engines.

On those it is fitted to three GM(Chevrolet) engines: 262 V6, 350 and 454 V8s. That makes a lot of cars...

32h is an automatic transmission for a FWD car. Let's hope you haven't made it too hard.
A 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado?

EDIT: Yes:  Turbo Hydramatic 425 for the Oldsmobile Toronado & Cadillac Eldorado, 1966 thru 1978.

32c - well the only four-choke carb I can think of is the four-barrel Holley which was probably fitted to lots of US cars but perhaps the Ford Mustang was one, so I'll try that carb and car.

This one's not a Holley...

Much newer than that...

I think 32f is the GM LNJ 3.4-litre V6 engine, built in China and imported into Canada to be used in the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, 2005-2009.

I'm not very good on American machinery, but I think 32c is a Carter 4BBL AFB (aluminium four-barrel) series carburettor. These were quite widely used, but you'd find one on a late 60s AMC Javelin, for example.
