I've never seen one with that trim piece that trails back from the
headlight on the fender or are you looking for something we can't see?

It was a relatively new material for building cars out of at the time and perhaps it just seemed like a good idea?  Maybe they thought that might be the way forward, as indeed it was for very low volume sports car manufacturers, although for few companies like DB AG.
