Title: Out Of Tune
Post by: DHoffmann on November 21, 2008, 02:26:31 AM
Alrighty, here's one that's been in the pipeline for a bit.

I present Out Of Tune, a puzzle containing 100 tuners and 100 available points! Some are obvious, others are obscurer than a swordfish's testicles.
On a lot it's fairly obvious what the car is based on. In fact, in most it is. I would like the manufacturer(tuner) and - when applicable - the creation's new name. Otherwise simply tuner and base vehicle.

Hopefully there's enough here to get a great spread of answerers, and hopefully @re doesn't clean up 98% of them again.  ;D

Have fun, and good luck!

Hmm... I wonder what's the deal with #11. I've always known this car as the Corrado Magnum by Design & Technik. And that's what also said for example here: http://home.conceptsfa.nl/~tmandos/corrado/engels.htm#Corrado%20magnum%20combi
and here: http://www.vw-club.co.yu/forum/index.php?topic=1777.0
and also in my 1990/1991 AutoKatalog which I could scan but I can't be bothered to at the moment ;)

I've never seen it branded as a MAG however?

The Corrado Magnum is stated on different web pages. Even Styling Garage (again!) claims the auhorship for this car.
I've found the very same pic of #11 named MAG Corrado. On those occasions I normally don't ask for verification...

Check your second link again, there's a black and white full page ad with the firm MAG at the bottom.  ;)
Title: Re: Out Of Tune
Post by: ImpishGrin on November 22, 2008, 07:37:55 AM
If you read the ad, it's only about the two prototypes being for sale. It doesn't state that the company that sells them is the one that made them :P

As for Styling Garage, it';s not that far from truth. Design & Technik was established by Christian Hahn after his previous company - Styling Garage (SGS) went bust :)

Edit: I actually got bothered and scanned the relevant page from my AutoKatalog. here you go.
Title: Re: Out Of Tune
Post by: DHoffmann on November 22, 2008, 08:21:18 AM
The way I see it someone saw the flier advertising the car for sale, read the 'firma: MAG' at the bottom - there's no mention whatsoever of Design & Technik - and then posted images using that new name elsewhere where I found them. The source I got these images from is one I generally can trust, but as we all know the internet has been known to be wrong on occasion.  ;D

What I'll do is give Allemano 1 point for correctly identifying the incorrect car, and you 1 point for incorrectly identifying the correct car. How's that sound?

#57 - 500SGS Gullwing Nope!

It is. You're probably looking for the name scar, as this photo also appears in their brochure. Scar sold, amongst others, SGS's and Gemballa's as if they were their own. For their brochure they used images that were made by the original tuners, in this case SGS. If you browse through the brochure you can also find photo's of SGS convertible's and stretch limousines, as well as another Gullwing.
In fact the location where that pic has been taken was used by SGS before for another photoshoot with a white Gullwing. Besides this I've also been talking with the owner of an SGS Gullwing widebody. His car has exactly the same bodykit and features as the black one in your photo. And according to the VIN it is a Styling Garage Special. He also said "Scar "stole" the image from SGS to use in their brochure after SGS had gone bankrupt".

They're not actually identical, first of all, and second this isn't the 'looks like this tuner' thread, it's the exact correct tuner that's required. You are, however, correct with Mutec! Well done.
We'll have to discuss about this later, OK? What do you think? ;)

Well, I'll have to strongly disagree. Although I know the answer you're looking for is Rolls-Royce Phantom Mutec Limousine, the Genaddi Black Tie Edition is equally satisfactory since the car is absolutely identical!
This is the Mutec: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/216867/stretched_rollsroyce_phantom.html

Simply so, there's a dome on the roof of the Genaddi that is not present on the Mutec, that alone means they're not the same cars in my books.

Hmmm... indeed... Nevertheless, I just find them too similar to be separated, unrelated ventures... but then again, there's not much to invent when stretching a Liomousine...

Funny how terms develop.
Tuning used to be what people did to engines (and other mechanical parts) to improve performance and in the main they would be careful that there was no outward sign of their work (except sometimes for a discreet badge).
Based on the examples in this thread, dramatically changing the outward appearance is what tuners do now, so I ask you younger people to tell me if there is also any performance enhancement or is it all show and no action?
This is a Speedwell A35 and, apart from the racing numbers and stick-on front numberplate, would you know?

PS I think that Riley Pathfinder behind it is one I once owned!

Koenig for instance got their knowledge from racing and they applied that on their cars. I'm mentioning Koenig, because they also had VERY visual mods as well. Besides Koenig I think most of this list has been performance tuned, some of them to a very high specification. And not all tuners aimed for really powerfull cars (1000HP Ferrari's are extreme examples), some went for luxerious cars or save cars (armoured to the highest specification). And I'm not talking about the tacky american strechtes, but cars that were enlarged in length, width and height, MPW style. Some made convertibles or coupe's while the factory was not offering these models. Tuning is modifying, not only for racing.

Well, in my book, tuning is not preparing for racing or making bodystiles different  from the offered by the factory. Tuning is modifying (and usually with bad taste) road models, either mechanically and/or visually, to make them faster/uglier/both for road use. On the other hand, preparing for race is race-spec'ing and the latter is coachbuilding or conversion. I would never consider a 456GT Venice Station or a R8 LMS as tuning...

True, I've thought about this before, but I find it difficult to label some companies as coachbuilder or tuner... So I call them both.. :p

A bit OT, but since it is somewhat related the replies:

The Q-Ship.  A stock looking car, that performs way above it's modest stock based exterior.

For example:
A Dinan 325 S2
A Audi A3 APR
A Fly'n Miata

My first attempt at the above; a stock exterior '71 V.W. Bug with 1835cc.  It would smoke our 356SC Porsche.

At this stage I'm dumbfounded that #30 has not fallen yet... Such a well known tuner and yet it's still standing... The brand of the car is a massive giveaway and looking at some of the other tuners that have been guessed, this one should have been an absolute doozy.

#17 is a fairly outrageous tuner, not greatly known but nonetheless has 20 years of experience. Provides both full tunes and smaller kits from it's single American store.

Only #17 and #30 left, once those are gone I can hand out the 100 well deserved points!

Only 2 cars left to guess before I can hand out this gigantic haul of 100 points to their respective guessers...

#17  - I found this tuner originally in a 2000ish copy of DuPont Registry. Does this help? If not, ask questions that may help!

#30... Come on! Need I give any more hints? VERY well known tuner, with the brand that they're best known for...

I'm afraid that that's not the correct answer. AC Schnitzer made at least two variations of the Z3, one which you have named. I'm after the other...
