I don't know what the car is, but that engine looks like a BMC A-Series, of the type used in small Austin, Morris, MG (etc) models from the early 50s onwards, and coming in various capacities from 803 to 1275 cc.

But as it's probably one of the commonest engines in the world, that doesn't really help much, does it?  :-\

Looks like an Austin (Mini) engine..

Perhaps one of our newer members with a soft-spot for race cars will name this one...

Is the place where it was built (inside Australia) relevant ?

Otto Puzzell

I suppose if somebody knew the builder, or where the car was registered, it might help.

Yes, but no. As Tom_I wrote BMC "A" series, and as it doesn't sit on its gearbox it isn't Mini. Gearbox and starter position have a VW look, but then that was pretty common for rear/mid-engined specials. German bits in sight as OP wrote. Also Italian (carb.) I think.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Hezza

A bit of a flier this, but is it a Nota Mini, one of two built by Guy Buckingham?

So my question was: was it built/registered in NSW?

neilshouse

It looks more like a BMC 'B series' engine, and the MG versions were usually painted red.

It was not specified which BMC engine is in the car (when it was listed for sale, some time before the puzzle picture was posted last year), so "It's a Mini / It's NOT a Mini / It's a B series" may not lead to a solution. I can tell you the engine displaces less than 2 liters.

Perhaps some of our eagle-eyed newcomers can tag this one...

This is not a Beast, and it doesn't have a Magneto.

No - think of that fellow's job, not his name...

I had hoped to find a generic picture.

What task is the pictured gentleman prepared to perform?
