What is this called, what was its purpose and when does it date from?

I think it's the same car : 1923 Mercury bodied Ford T

Yes, it is indeed a Mercury body, although I don't know what the mechanicals of the puzzle car are, so I can't call it a Ford.

It was available for various chassis - a copy of the 1924 advert is pictured below: an early version of the kit-car idea!
