Experts?

Not at all!
Looking at the cars behind Volkswagen-based?
Neither!
Could this be a1980s Moskvitch?
Wrong country!
I see now it is a double post. But forgot what the other car was. I see it from the front window/bonnet.
No it's not. For some reasons I changed the puzzle pic, but it's still the same car!

4x4 isn't wrong.

Yes, well done! :)
Viewing this car from a different angle shows better how huge it really is:
(and what a poor designed car this is as well..)
Here´s another contemporary photo:
And another one:
Here's another picture.
The guy who owns it reckons it's based on a Jeep chassis with a 4.2 litre straight-six engine (which must be a Jaguar XK); i.e. not Range Rover based, unless it's just a different version?

If it's got a Jeep chassis, it could be powered by Jeep's AMC-derived 258 cu in (4.2 L) six, used in Jeeps from 1971 to 1990. International Harvested also used this engine in their Jeep-like vehicles for a number of years.
Aha - you're probably right. If it did have a Jaguar engine he would probably have said so..
There are quite a few images out there of the Safari, but I don't think I've seen a picture of the engine.
