A Chapman? Chapman-Mercury? Looks quite similar!

OK, it's late, and all cats are grey in the night, so my brain possibly told me 'Yeah, Bristol = Mercury!'...

Could it be FMC though?
Yes - it's the FMC.
Driven in the photo by Jim McCaig at the Borders Speed Trials at Brunton in early October 1956.
(as a side note, Jim Clark was also competing at this event - one of his first)

I seem to have been mistaken that this car had a Bristol engine - probably it is much smaller.
I had also thought that the car was built by Alex Chambers but that may wrong too!

Brain fade is my only excuse and by way of compensation, I have awarded faksta and Allan_L a point each for their endeavours in trawling through the Lester-Bristol puzzle trying to find the solution.

If I discover any more information on the FMC I'll post it here.
In the meantime - here is the original photo with a caption.

The site that mentions FMC and where I actually took this name from has it with Bristol engine and with Alex Chambers at the wheel both times it is listed (once in 1956 and once in 1957, both at Charterhall)...

Maybe I wasn't wrong after all - I'll have to check my 1956/57 sources again.
Thanks faksta - for a moment I thought I was going mad!
I'll award you an extra point for that.
Perhaps I can find another photo.......

That's true but it's because I'm relieved to find that I'm not senile yet! ; :D
