What was this car called, what was it based on and when was it built?
One point for the solution.
Experts?
Moving up
Is there a Hudson connection?
No Hudson connection but the base car is American
As a clue, here is a partial view of the car as it appears today -
It appears as though nothing of the car in the original pic remains, except, perhaps, the spring shackles :-\

You could be right but the basic car and engine remains underneath ;)
Based on an American Bantam?
Not the Bantam but based on a larger American car of the mid-1930s
Jordan?
Not Jordan
Another clue - it's a hyphenated name
Too small to be a Graham-Paige, Pierce-Arrow or Willys-Knight. I guess I'm stumped.

Otto - don't give up!
You've just mentioned the name....... ;D
OK, let's try Willys-Knight

Not that one.
I believe the chassis may have been modified (shortened) when the conversion was undertaken.
Let's hope this isn't strike two: Graham-Paige?

Yes it is.
Do you know the story behind it and who built it?
In case you do, I'll lock it for you until your next reply.
I do not. Please leave open for others.
I'm going to give you a point for the make Otto and award another point for anyone to complete the story (there's still quite a lot more to come - builder, year, etc.)
Open for all again.
That's very generous, especially after you gave a clue.
Thank you.

A further clue to this Graham-Paige special -
The man who was responsible for creating this car shared his surname with a famous racing driver
Did this car compete at Monaco?
Just came across another photo of this Graham-Paige based car -
Hmm, I will accept the first guess who comes up with the name of this special for the final point.
We have established it's based on a Graham Paige (highly modified) and is named the ? Special.
As I mentioned it shares its' name with a Formula One GP winner of the past.
An easy point on offer to tie this one up?
Stewart?
Moss?
The era is correct but not Moss...
Hawthorn?

Hawthorn?
Not him.
Can't be too many left now.....
Brooks?

Brooks?
Brooks is correct!
The car is the Brooks Special built in 1951 by R.C. Brooks on a modified Graham-Paige chassis of 1934 and fitted with a 4350cc straight-eight engine.
