This looks annoyingly familiar to me, but I'm at a total loss. Looks to be based on Triumph TR running gear though, judging by the wheels?

Not a Triumph but based on an equally popular British sports car

Actually I thought those were MG wheels..

So is it based on an MG? TF perhaps?

MG based is correct but I don't know if it's on a TD or TF chassis

I would have guessed about 1954 as well..

What I don't know is the bodyshell that was used - any idea?

I haven't no.
But really it dates from a little before the proprietary body came on the scene, which could be used by all and sundry.  My guess would be it's an individual hand-laid body.
