I honestly have no idea what I see in the picture.... is the large box something to do with the means of propulsion?

Obviousely used for their stage/tour equipment?

A couple of sources indicate the trailer was a collapsible stage, upon which the Monkees could perform. Like the Monkeemobile, it was constructed by Dean Jeffries, using the rear fenders of 1966 Pontiac GTO's.
