I had to narrow it down, what would you suggest? ???  Northern/southern from Frankfurt? From one of the 16 states?

So, would Ex-GDR territory be right?

I thought you meant the political, not the geographical, Western Germany. Yes, it is from Ex-GDR. (And west of Frankfurt (Oder)  ;) )
