Tackitt

1967 Ford Holman Moody Honker II as raced by Mario Andretti in the 1967 Can-Am series. The Honker II was basically payed for by Ford, with some GT40 parts and an enlarged GT40 engine. The bodyshape was a result of thorough windtunnel testing. It never was a real succes and according to Mario Andretti it was the worst car he has ever driven. The name of team manager Paul Newman appeared prominently on the front of the car, referring to this Mario Andretti once said: 'Why don't you put my name on the car and let Paul Newman drive?'. Three coupe bodied cars with Cosworth DFV engines were used in Europe, badged Ford 3L, but they were not a success either.

Interestingly Paul Newman did just what Andretti suggested and drove the car as a prop during the making of his film: The Winnig. Not surprisingly he crashed it and the remains were laid to rest in the Holman and Moody premises, until the car was restored at the end of the nineties.

By the way, John Holman was "Honker I" for his love of the air horns on eighteen wheelers.
