I don't - and maybe Teague did not -know any Mazda designers from this period.

There is a design firm for the Mazda RX 500..still locked for you, to tell the firm that designed & built the Mazda RX 500 prototype car. I am also not sure if anyone at AMC or if Dick Teague, knew about the Mazda RX500. The premise of this puzzle, was to see if designers are on the same track..with a car design..without being aware of each other..or did someone know about the others project & copied it(stole it).

reply to carnut's input: I was aware that this had been a singular puzzle on autopuzzles..my puzzle was about trying to find out, which came out first & if the designers knew of each others projects..or if they were developed independently. I was expecting on a comment from you, & you did not disappoint.

Yes, I was just providing the link to the earlier puzzle also pointing out that siata1 didn't quite get the name right..
There was no implication that it was anything but a genuine puzzle!

For clarity's sake: Dick Teague didn't design the AMX-3. He headed AMC's design department, and assigned the project to a team that included Bob Nixon, the designer mostly responsible for the Javelin and the production AMX.  The car was first displayed at the Chicago Auto Show in February of 1970.

The Mazda RX 500 was designed in-house at the Toyo Kogyo, and was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show in October of 1970.

Other than some detailing of the air extractors on the front lids of each, I'm not sure how anyone could confuse one for the other, or suspect one design was copied from the other.  But that's just my opinion, of course.
