The basis of this odd beast is pretty obvious. I'd like to know what it was called, and when it was built for a point

Interesting! It does have a name though.
I'm still unsure as to the name of the chap who built it, though. As usual that period cutting  completely ignores this fact!

Is it named after an animal\insect?

Look what I've found, The remains of this "vehicle" on sale in Ebay
They called The Maxwagen
It is a one off car and was designed and built by a welsh man from Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire, UK in 1968
There is a British patent for the construction of this car
Front and back wheels steer the car at the same time with an original design
Everything, including the chassis, body etc is bolted together as the original owner could not weld
The battery tray moves forward when the car slows down to apply the back brake
The car is full of unique construction ideas like this
The car has been in a welsh motor museum for a number of years
Car needs a complete rebuild.
Included is a 1300cc beetle engine to fit in
I'm getting the car re-registered with the DVLC at present

That's it, good find! Sadly I haven't been able to find the name of the gentleman who built it

Me neither. Maybe, the picture and the patent number could be useful.
