That's the first of two Wendler designed Gutbrod cabriolets. It remained an one-off while the second* was built in small numbers (10 pieces).

Actually the official name is Gutbrod Superior Sport Roadster

* internally the ungainly car was called "Schwangere Ente" ~ pregnant duck.

Joao's picture shows the last of the three (Sorry, Allemano  ;) ) different Superior roadsters built by Wendler. This third version appeared in 1951, was designed by Friedrich Hans van Winsen and remained a one-off.

Yes, I recognized that later. :-\
According to Rosellen's book it's not clear if it ever was intended for production (in contrary to the other Wendler roadsters).
It was Wolfgang Gutbrod's private car for many years later.

The third one is the most attractively proportioned by far!  Was there perhaps some Italian influence?

I don't think so. It was probably styled to look more like the other Gutbrod Superior cars.

I had never seen the 3rd car before, that really is a lovely little thing.

A well known photo, but it always makes me smile and seems appropriate in this thread:

Here´s another rare photo of the puzzle car:
Yes and no! It is definitely the same body, but it isn't a Gutbrod. When it came clear that the Sport Roadster didn't find Gutbrod's approval, Wendler tried to find another utilization of this body design and sold it as a Topolino body. That was easily done, because wheelbase and chassis size of those two cars were almost identical. Upon further inspection you can see the "FIAT" lettering on the hubcaps.

And I really thought to myself: those wheels do lokk like a Topolino´s...

Well, thank you!

It would have been a nice new puzzle... :-\
