It could be a __________. Or, it could be a ___________ . In this case, it's both. So, what is it?

This may have been a proposal design for a 57/58/59 Mercury to be right at the top of the Mercury range, based on the Lincoln Continental of the time. The fins are suggestive of Mercury design cues, but there's a lot of Lincoln there as well.

That's more or less correct. The story is this: The ford motor company toyed with the idea of sharing body stampings for the Mercury and Lincoln product lines. This clay was built in 1956, and foretold some elements of the '57 and '58 cars.
