Tell me what this 'car' is, and, also, who built it.

Does the car get its name from the cobra coming out of the basket?

Magic Carpet kustom by George Barris.

The Magic Carpet Car may have been built by Steve Tansy.  One of his later projects was the Pool Hustler.  Many technical details of the two cars match exactly (Hemi engine, valve cover design, chrome frame under engine).  It is possible that the Magic Carpet Car was rebuilt to become the Pool Hustler.

I don't think Barris had anything to do with building this one, though I wouldn't be surprised if he or his slappies claimed he built it.

My source indicates the builder was somebody other than Tansy, though it's history is a bit cloudy. If you have conclusive proof, please PM me.

Wild-assed guess:  Gary Hartfield.
Yer right about Barris slappin one of his emblems on anything that came within 100 yards of his shop.  He's claimed to build just about every show car ever made, with the possible exception of a few Roth-mobiles.  XR-6 and the "Cruisin USA" Merc are a coupa good examples.
