You are half-right, but it's much older than a 67 Beetle.

I'll lock this one for you for 24 hours.

Yep - a 1935 protoype by a Berlin-based company called Leichtbau Maier. The Beetle chassis and engine were added by the current owner as a means of moving the car around. The owner himself doesn't know much about the vehicle, and has asked for info from anyone who might recognize it.

I am confused.  Is it a Leichtbau Maier or not ?  If it is, does this puzzle complete Puzzle #1749 ?

Interisting! I didn't checked as my source gives different infos, almost on all counts! My source mentions indeed a mechanical base, a different year and a slightly different name. So, take it or leave it! ;)

Maybe the different spelling of the name is one reason why it's still a mystery on some online source....

But of course, it seems to be the same car as Otto's #1749

I found some photos of the car in a 1980 veteran car magazine, one picture showing it lying on its roof in Berlin in 1945. The license plate was IA 212919, but unfortunately they didn't find an answer who built it.

You're right, it's ridiculous to wait any longer.
I added two different spellings to the title and awarded another point to Wendax.

The designer/builder of this car is Friedrich Eugen Maier who lived and worked in Berlin. He had some patents on this design (already communicated with recent owner of the car).

The restored car was shown at Schloss Dyck Classic Days last weekend. You could even see it running!
Probably the Nazis deleted all records of this car as Eugen Maier was a Jew.

I'll post another feature of Schloss Dyck soon.

There is a nice article in Motor Klassik this month, and there is a website dedicated to the Leichtbau Maier (with hyphen and .de  ;) ) meanwhile. The car was originally equipped with the DKW engine in the rear, but was later modified to VW mechanics. The "1945 picture" showing it lying on its roof is from the 1970's, when it was used as a movie prop. Only this single prototype was built, and the chassis number LM 0501 / 35 probably refers to its date of completion. I'm looking forward to seeing it next year at the Prototyp museum in Hamburg.

It should be merged with this one: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=14070
