It looks vaguely English and I think, judging by what looks like a 'new' Beetle windscreen, it's probably Golf-related has a rear-mounted VW Golf engine, maybe a VR5?

I have no info about the windscreen but the mechanical basis is not VW...

It is obviously mid-engined.

Did the engine originate in that position or it is a FWD rig transposed to the back of a car...

You're correct - and yes, the base car was also mid-engined

four-wheel-drive?

No (although that surely doesn't narrow it down very much - how many 4x4 mid-engined cars can you name?)

Yes, it's Elise-based. Locked for you to finish it off with the country of origin (not hard)

English - as alluded to on the 7th post.

English - probably (though it might be Welsh or Scottish or Northern Irish...)
One point to you.
If anyone knows anything more about this Lotus Elise-based one-off I'd be delighted to hear about it.

Maybe it's a modified GTM Ballista?

The puzzle car was sold on ebay.co.uk in 2012 for 900 pounds.  It was an abandoned project which cost over 26,000 pounds.

Paraphrasing the listing:

As pictured, the car is just a mockup, not a driveable vehicle.  Auction included the mockup, moulds made from the mockup, and one prototype body shell from the moulds.

Wheelbase and track are the same as an Elise.  The windscreen was from a Lotus Elise.

The car did originally featured a modified midtec (Lee Noble chassis).  Chassis was not included in the auction.  It was intended that the body be fitted to an Elise chassis, but this never took place.

Many thanks for the replies. Wonder what happened to the car as 'won' on eBay?

That GTM Ballista does look to be a different shape (windscreen, doors etc)
