Tell me the name of this car and what it's based on.

Close but, no cigar. It's a BMW underneath, but the car isn't from 1953 and the name is slightly different.

How about 1950 Reif-BMW driven by Rudi Krause from the DDR?

Phonetically your first attempt (reply#4) was the best so far.

Hmmm...I suppose that leads to Kurt Baum and his BMW-Eigenbau, although the photos I've been able to find of it are different from the one in the puzzle.  But the bodywork of the car could easily have been changed, especially the nose/grill, which is one of the key differences I've found in my search.  But who knows?  The car might have been crashed and a new nose fitted...and I just haven't found a photo of that.

Btw, Google Translate treats Herr Baum's name rather interestingly.  "Kurt Baum aus Hainspitz" was translated as "Kurt tree Hainspitz."  I LOL'ed.  :)

Yes, I see, but I'd found this image along with this text: "Kurz vor dem Unfall: Der Miller PB9 übersah das Bremsmanöver des BMW Straubel Formel 2" which described it as a Straubel, not a Straub.

Apparently what followed that photo wasn't very good.

hmmm. I have to admit I don't know the answer to this little issue..
Important sources clearly mention the name Kurt Straubel quite often...
Maybe others help to confirm?
If I'm wrong I award you a point of course.

According to http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=12590.0 it is definitely Kurt Straubel's BMW Eigenbau. He built it in 1949, it received a BMW 315/1 engine in 1950, and received the Intertyp body in 1951.

Okay, thank you. Strange that he later swapped the 328 for a 315/1 engine. Or didn't he?

Anyway.. point added to RayTR

I have to say I also had doubts about the true identity of this one.
The site where I found it would have I believed normally been reliable.
Please deduct a point from me as Ray was the one who identified it correctly.

No I don't. You solved the puzzle just the way I wanted, so there's no need for this even if we stand corrected later.

Thank you but as Ray also received a point I won't argue.

Here's a photo of Kurt Straubel's BMW Eigenbau in period.
