Solved - MJW #1004 - HRG-Ford (formerly the HRG-Maserati) 1949

What engine is it fitted with in the photo and what engine did it have originally?

Maserati A6 GCS from about 1953

The original engine was a 2 litre 6-cylinder Maserati engine similar to the one in the Fotmula 2 car.  If this has had an engine swap then presumably it's  Detroit iron - a Chevrolet V8.

And judging from the skirt length, I would say this photo dates from 1968

Well you are definitely on the right lines here.
The car originally fitted with a Maserati engine. However it was replaced by a British engine as shown in the photo.
As a clue - the base car is British notwithstanding the Maserati style radiator.
You could be right about the photo dating from 1968 (yes I remember skirt lengths in those days very well!) but the car dates from much earlier of course.
I'm going to LOCK it for you in case you have any more thoughts....

I'm now totally confused.   

A British base car originally fitted with a Maserati engine and then later with a British engine.   

And with that style of body.    

The only remote possibility I can think of is the JBW-Maserati sports car which may have later had a Jaguar engine.

And as to a year, I'll say 1951

I don't know if the Maserati engine was fitted originally to this car.
It may have had a British engine to start with before the Maserati was installed.
The car was later re-engined with a British engine as shown in the puzzle car.

I'll keep it locked for you and in the meantime here is a small photo of the car racing with a Maserati engine.

I should have added that the car has nothing to do with JBW and the year is earlier than 1951.

I have a vague memory of an HRG of that shape or similar being raced at the 8 Clubs Silverstone by Tony Searson in the 1980s.
Can't find a picture of course.

Those were the only two pictures of this car that I've come across.
The second one shows the car at Goodwood in 1950 being driven by John Gilbert.
If I find anything more I'll post it here.
