Post by: woodinsight on October 25, 2012, 02:36:02 AM
Last one for the moment.
What was this unusual car named, what base did it use, what engine was fitted and when was it built? All for one full point!

No New Zealand connection but Reliant is very much the basis of this machine.
Which model Reliant was it based on, what engine did it use and when was it built.
Answer those and a point will be awarded.

The car as it was originally before the second owner painted it yellow -

Let's have a guess: based on Reliant Regal 3/25, Ford engine, built around 1975

One out of three!
It was based on a lengthened Regal chassis but the engine is not Ford and you are a couple of decades out with the date of build.

Is this locked?

It's based on a 1965 Regal, with a Morris Marina engine fitted. Was/is owned by Clive Cooke and campaigned in the motorcycle class(!) at classic trials events. I believe it was built in the early '90s but I'm not sure who by, or what it was called. I am going to email Mr. Cooke today and hopefully be able to complete the answer....

No - it's not locked.
Morris Marina engine is correct. It was completed in 1996 but the car no longer exists.
I look forward to your reply in due course.

Old Spot Piglet, built in 1996 by Duncan Welch.
Reliant Regal chassis stretched by 9 inches to take a 1275cc Morris Marina engine and gearbox.

Yes, that's the car!
Apologies to Barrett and others who guessed pieces of the puzzle - I didn't lock it as it was better for the puzzle to be solved on a "first come first served" basis.
Here's a frontal view of the car when painted yellow (the 'roof' by the way was built from a roof-mounted luggage box!)
