Solved - MJW #866 - Benson DKW Special 1965

It's been over a month since I last posted any puzzles so let's put that to rights now....

Let's start with a red car, albeit one that looks if it needs a bit of TLC.
A point is on offer if you can identify who built it, what engine it used and the year it was completed.

As far as I know it was not based on a Crosley and it doesn't have a Crosley engine either.

DKW Special by Dick Boggs.

Car has no official name we know of, but was referenced as DKW Special by Dick Boggs.

The car was built by Benson High School students in Portland Oregon in 1964/65. Cal Watson (the first owner) raced the car in the Pacific Northwest. Dick Boggs, Seattle WA, bought the car with intention to restore Dec 1990. In December 2006, the car was moved to the Larry Haynes stable in Santa Fe, NM.
