Title: Solved - NEH 1567: Bertone Jaguar XJ40 proposal
Post by: Carnut on February 13, 2012, 07:55:00 AM
What's this, from when - for 1 point?

Google Image Search continues to raise its ugly head on AutoPuzzles.
For the sake of our newer members who may not be aware of past discussions on it, Google Image Search as a means of solving puzzles is banned on this website.

AutoPuzzles is primarily a game of automotive knowledge, not of who can copy and paste the quickest.

We ask all members to remember and respect this, and retain the right to ask puzzle-solvers how they came to their answer.

Have fun!

This is a late-'70s proposal for what would become the Jaguar XJ-40 series.

It is a Jaguar XJ40 proposal, yes, but I'm afraid it looks like you've been trumped..

..because it is this Bertone proposal, which I have as from 1982 althought I'm not convinced about that date.

The puzzle car is the one shown in your side-view.  Your front view is not actually the same car!
Here's the original of my puzzle car (you can see the lights set into the bumper on your photo are not there on the puzzle car, and the bumper wraps around, which it doesn't on your picture).

Well done and bad luck tonyola.

Isn't it the usual policy to lock the puzzle for someone if they're very close to the answer? I would have supplied the coachbuilder had that been part of the original question.

Lower the greenhouse of a Ford Fairmont onto the body of a De Tomaso Deauville, and voila!

Yes, but unfortunately julien1A posted his reply before I'd seen yours, so there was not much else I could do; sorry.  Since the coachbuilder wasn't specifically part of the question (but you could say it was part of the answer) you were largely correct with your reply, so I'll give you a point anyway.

Thank you. By the way, the source that dates the picture from 1982 is probably incorrect. The styling of the XJ-40 had already been pretty well locked up by 1979. Here's a picture of the completed mock-up dated June 1980.

the bertone prototype is from 1974:

"Bertone's submission for the new Jaguar saloon was probably the best of the three proposals put forward by the Italian designers (Pininfarina and Ital Design being the others). Certain elements of the final car can be seen in this mid-1974 study."

Btw sorry Tonyola, I was a bit too enthusiast, jumping on my answer...
