What's this, based on what and from when does it date, for 1 point?

Google Search by Image continues to raise its ugly head on AutoPuzzles.
For the sake of our newer members who may not be aware of past discussions on it, Google Search by Image as a means of solving puzzles is banned on this website.

AutoPuzzles is primarily a game of automotive knowledge, not of who can copy and paste the quickest.

We ask all members to remember and respect this, and retain the right to ask puzzle-solvers how they came to their answer.

Have fun!

Thanks for the front page coverage.
Curious though that the front registration plate is a different colour?!

It just looked messy, with the rattle-can bandit's work showing.  ;)

Right!
It was bit dark working down there and I couldn't really see what I was doing!

Found this one as a Jaguar Special named MEX 52.
It is based on Jaguar XJ 12 running gear, has a body by CC Coachworks and was built in 1978.

You didn't include the picture of the engine.  That would tell most people it was an XJ12.

Well, I decided that it has a Rover P5 radiator grille and spent a [very enjoyable] couple of hours googling all the permutations of Rover **** I could think of.  I found out a lot about the P5 but didn't find this car for obvious reasons.
