It's the Aosta - Gran San Bernardo race, I guess around 1925
-
yes it is!
one point for you!
-
Was that a race or a hillclimb?
-
A hillclimb race from 1920 to 1957
-
And the last couple of years they run a classic version. Haven't seen it so far, but I know the road... must be quite interesting (and scary) to see the oldies racing uphill to approx. 2100 metres above sea level ! :car:
-
A hillclimb race from 1920 to 1957
In English, a hillclimb is not a race. One major difference is that there is never any need for overtaking.
A hillclimb is a competition to cover an ascent against the clock and cars run one at a time.
A race is generally on a closed circuit with a massed start and cars have to overtake to gain position or to lap slower cars. In earlier times some road races also had cars starting one at a time, the Targa Florio, Mille Miglia and the Carrera Panamericana being the best known postwar ones. As the slowest cars started first the faster cars had to overtake them.
Hence my earlier question seeking clarification.
-
yes you are right: in english the Aosta - S. Bernardo is a hillclimb.
but in italian we say "corsa in salita"
-
Whatever, hill climb or race, in both cases the fastest car wins ....

True, but it's a question of semantics (the meaning of words). To ask "which race is this ?" is misleading if the answer is actually a hillclimb and not a race.
-
I agree, but I think you can't take this semantic knowledge for granted at an international forum like ours. In German, for example, a hillclimb is a Bergrennen, literally translated a mountain race.
-
Exactly, I agree with Wendax, what's in a name ? We shouldn't be too picky about these kind of things. Besides, whether a race or a hill climb, there can only be one winner !
-
I accept the confusion for those who don't have English for their mother tongue, but I maintain it is downright misleading to ask for "The xxx Race" when the required answer is "The xxx Hillclimb".

Also in Italian a hillclimb can be called "gara in salita" and "gara" means "race"... so it's a problem of language... :-\
