What's the make and model designation of this car?

Quiller

I don't believe there's a connection with either Porsche or NSU

DynaMike

But it is German, isn't it?

A Giorgetto Giugiaro design study for Volkswagen?

Passat?

Quiller

No Giugiaro connection ...

hugo90

Might I guess it's a General Motors car with Frua bodywork?  That nose appeared on a Camaro by Frua in the seventies.  It has chrome wheel trims like Vega and similar.

Quiller

It's an elegant guess, hugo90, but sadly no part of it matches the reality...

This is the Volkswagen Experimental-Sicherheits, or VW ESVW for short, the German marque's contribution to the safety car concept fad of the very early 1970s.
A car is for life, not just for Christmas.

Hello

That is the 1972 ESVW. Air cooled pancace engine in the rear, an experimental safety car from Volkswagen. It had an electronic co pilot and "safety masks" that appeared in front of the drivers and passangers faces in case of an accident.

barrett

Well done, you've just doubled your points!

qwaszx

'pancake' means the ultra flat 411 engine?
