PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:
In this puzzle each AutoPuzzles member is allowed only one ID attempt per day.
Once you post an ID attempt, you must wait 24 hours from the time stamp on that post until you make your next ID attempt. Multiple guesses within a 24 hour span will result in the second and any subsequent guesses being deleted.
This is to allow members in different time zones to have a fair crack at the puzzle, and ensure that anyone with "specialist knowledge" does not hijack the whole puzzle. :)
So on to the puzzle. I've never been a big fan of two-wheeled vehicles, but I have a soft spot for scooters. At the age of 16, the first motorised vehicle I ever bought was a semi-derelict Lambretta Li 2, which I restored to working condition.
So here are 18 scooters for you to identify. Make and model will earn you a point, though you make also like to give an approximate year of manufacture. Any further information is always appreciated.
Points will be awarded at the end when the puzzle is solved.
Have fun, and remember - only one ID attempt per day.

Though it's not my favourite subject a very nicely selected puzzle!
-
Experts?
-
#2 is a BSA Sunbeam. Made between 1959 and 1965, also known as the Triumph Tigress
-
The first correct answer! Well done.
-
#9 is a DKW Hobby
-
You are very close. It does look like a DKW Hobby, but it is a later development, made in a different country under a different name.
#9 is locked for you to find the name. You do not have to wait the 24 hours - you can reply straight away. :)

Could it be a French Manurhin?
-
Yes, that's it.
The DKW had a continuously variable belt drive transmission with a manually operated clutch. The Manurhin development added an automated clutch, making it the first scooter (I think) with a fully automated transmission, very much the norm these days.
-
13 NSU Prima?
-
Yes, that's right.
-
# 3 : DKR De Luxe Defiant 200 cc
-
Yes, that's the one!
-
sorry but I have to wait 24 hr to solve another puzzle?
-
Yes, 24 hours after the time stamp on your reply #13.
-
#14 is a Puch 125SR.
-
To be honest, I am more than a little hazy about the model designations of Puch scooters. There's the SR, and SRA (which I think adds an electric starter), and engines of 125 or 150 cc. And are they all called Alpines, or is that a particular model?
Anyway, you are right, and if anyone has definitive knowledge about the various models, I would be interested to know...

I honestly don't know, I knew it was a Puch, and just guessed it was a 125SR.
-
11 Glas Goggo Roller?
-
Yes, that's right. A very distinctive scooter.
-
# 8: Sun Wasp "Scooter de Luxe" 175 cc
-
Correct!
Made by the Sun Cycle & Fitting Company of Birmingham, UK, better known for making pedal cycles.
-
Open to everyone now, but please note, only one ID attempt per 24 hours.
-
#12: Raleigh Roma
-
#6 - Moto Rumi 125 1950s?
-
Is No3 a Lohner? An L125 maybe?
-
#12: Raleigh Roma
That's right. Not an original design, though - it was the Italian Bianchi Orsetto made under licence.
-
#6 - Moto Rumi 125 1950s?
Sorry, not a Moto Rumi.
-
Is No3 a Lohner? An L125 maybe?
No 3 is already solved - it's the DKR Defiant (see Reply #1 under the puzzle pictures). ;)
-
4 Iso Diva?
-
#5 might be a Triumph Contessa Tourenroller from Nuremberg
-
4 Iso Diva?
Yes, that's right.
-
#5 might be a Triumph Contessa Tourenroller from Nuremberg
Yes, a really high quality scooter made by the German Triumph Company, founded by Siegfried Bettmann after he established the Triumph bicycle factory in the UK. These machines were marketed in the UK, but under the brand name TWN (Triumph Werke Nürnberg) to distinguish them from the British Triumph products.
-
#17 is a Maico Maicoletta, made between 1954-1966.
-
#7 is an Excelsior Monarch Mk 2
-
# 16 : Dayton Albatross
-
#17 is a Maico Maicoletta, made between 1954-1966.
Yes!
-
#7 is an Excelsior Monarch Mk 2
That's right.
-
# 16 : Dayton Albatross
And another one correct - good work so far!
-
1 Dürkop Diana?
-
Yes, that's it (except that Dürkopp has two 'P's). ;)
-

 Thanks.
-
#15 is a Cyclemaster? Piatti.
-
#18: James 150 Scooter
-
#15 is a Cyclemaster? Piatti.
That's right. An Italian design first built by d'Ieteren in Belgium before production was taken up by Cyclemaster in the UK. Probably one of the least successful scooters of all time, but highly collectable now.
-
#18: James 150 Scooter
Yes, made by one of the UK's oldest motorcycle manufacturers. The artwork is a bit odd - they made several publicity pictures like this with strangely out-of-focus people.
Good solid solving so far - only two left!
-
# 10 : Phoenix scooter
-
# 10 : Phoenix scooter
Yes, it is. A low-volume production British scooter available with various Villiers single or twin cylinder engines. This is the 150cc version.
I also found an advert with a terrible slogan (for non-English speakers, you say 150 as "one-fifty", so it rhymes with "nifty" and "thrifty").
-
#6 is a 1958 Palmieri & Gulinelli Guizzo 150.
-
I don't know the exact date myself, but you've got the right machine - well done.
The puzzle picture is from a British magazine advert. I've since found a better photo of the same model.
-
And with that the puzzle is solved! Well done, everyone. :applause:
The final points tally:
Craig Gillingham: 5
hondast: 4
thorax: 4
Wendax: 3
sixtee5cuda: 1
grobmotorix: 1
This was my first attempt at a group puzzle - thanks to all for taking part.
-
That was a really fun, fast puzzle. Thank you.
