Who knows this car?
PM sent ;)
Up!
East German EMW 343 prototype from around 1952. This was an attempt to both modernize and get away from the previous BMW look.
That´s the car.
To be precise, it is not an EMW 343, but an Awtowelo BMW 343, because it appeared in 1951. The marque name changed to EMW in January 1952.
Sure, I´ll change the title, thank you.
What's this and from when does it date, for 1 point?:
ANYONE FOUND GIVING ANSWERS GLEANED BY USING GOOGLE SEARCH BY IMAGE MAY BE BANNED FOR AN INDETERMINATE PERIOD!
BMW, 1939, Autenrieth?
1947. Farina?

1947. Farina?
No. I don't know that it was bodied by a coachbuilder.
A V8 prototype?

A V8 prototype?
It's a prototype but not V8 powered.
Here's a picture of it with the front how it really looks since you've identified it as a BMW!:
Experts?
I believe this to be an EMW 342 from 1950/51.
One of the vehicles made in Eisenach after the Russians moved the 327/328 tooling to the Eastern Zone of Germany.

Not quite, but you're from around the right era and it was probably part of the same programme..
But it wasn't designated as a 342..
Hmm.
Well, never trust the Internet.
Further searching would indicate a BMW of 1951 but several sources still indicate the model as a 342.
I will keep looking.
It's based on a 342 but this particular picture is of a prototype model in its own right, which never made production.
It's actually from slightly earlier, to give you a clue!
OK, Norman, I have now read more German today than in the last month, even confused Google Translate I was jumping around so much.
So, let us now try a 1949 340 or 340S possibly still from Eisenach and based on the 342 if my own translation is correct.

That's what I was looking for and that's what it is according to the caption.
However, I've since learned that the caption is misleading and this is a 342 from 1950/51 as you said!
Sorry to give you the runaround but I'll give you a point in compensation!
Because of its date of creation it is definitely a BMW and not a EMW nor a BMW/EMW. ;)
We had the modified version, the BMW 342-2, before: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=10138.0
And finally a nice front shot of the 342:
Thanks for the point!!
Yes, our beloved Internet.................
I think I found about 8 sites dealing with this car and it was sort of a tossup
regarding BMW versus EMW and all but one identified the car as a 342.
What was a little bit off-putting was that the majority of the sites were true "enthusiast" sites or forums, not the odd "PhotoBucket" pic that someone just threw out there.
Neither Michael Frostick's nor Werner Oswald's excellent BMW histories had any photos of this series so I had to use the Internet.
In any case, I also found some great BMW military vehicle photos for my other passion that I had not seen before so it was all in all a successful few hours.

Merged, as I believe this should be a 342 rather than a 343?
No doubt someone will correct me if they are not the same car and I can un-merge them...
Please unmerge, because the 342 is the car with the traditional BMW grille, and 343 is the car with the American looks.
Noted Wendax, but I don't think either of the puzzles posted were the 343.
Both were the 342 with the BMW kidney grilles (blanked out in my puzzle so as not to look like a BMW).
Only when the heading incorrectly said 343 was the picture of the American-fronted car posted (which actually is the 343), but this car has never, AFAIK, been posted as a puzzle, only the 342 twice.
I changed the title - thank you guys!

Now I see!
At least we can post the 343 as a puzzle in the not so near future. ;)
