This shouldn't be too difficult.
Can you name the engine and the car in which it's contained?

Close, but not quite enough for the point yet.

Since this size of engine was the only one available this model year, can you provide the year, displacement, and trim level?

Zerk

Can this be a 1993 4.0 litre XR6? If so, much of the trim details are ED model.

Ok, sorry for the delays.
This isn't the 4.0 liter (check the radiator overflow bottle),
and it isn't the 3.2 CFI (it was never offered as the only engine size for a model year).

Now that I've eliminated the alternatives, should I just bury the puzzle?

It is a 1989 or 1990 EA Falcon with the 3.9 Liter SOHC MFI engine.

Close enough for a point.
This is the 1990 Ford EA Falcon / DA LTD 3.9 liter MFI/MPI/MPFI Inline-6 engine.

The original engine is actually from a 1990 Ford DA LTD, but the engine bay is indistinguishable from the EA Falcons. (AFAIK)
On the Falcon side, the early 3.2 liter engine was dropped for 1990, making 1990 the first year that only one engine size was available - the 3.9 liter.  However, the 3.9 liter was available with either throttle-body fuel injection (in lower-trim models) or multi-point fuel injection (in the top-level Falcon Ghia model).

In 1991, the 3.9 liter engine was modified to 4.0 liters when the EA II / DA II cars were introduced.  The displacement change resulted in a couple other underhood adjustments that don't show up in this picture.

Here's the unmodifed engine picture along with the car it came in.
